Giguere signed for 3 more years

Samuel Giguere, WR on the practice squad, signed an extension of 3 years.

It's in french, but it's the more important information revealed. Oh yeah, GIguere also says he wouldn't be surprised to see Marvin come back for another year.

If you have problem with the translation, just asked me.

In the interview with Polian on Colts.com, he seemed pretty high on our young receivers, including Giguere. And now signing him for three years - sounds like he has great potential.

    That's really a formality.

A player on the practice squad has been cut, cleared waivers, and are being paid a reduced sum for one year. At the end of the year, the player is a free agent not under contract with anyone. Further, since they were only on the practice squad, they don't accrue a year of experience. In that regard, he's still a first year player, equivalent in all contract-related respects to an undrafted rookie.

A three year, minimum salary deal is standard for those players. I haven't verified it yet, but I imagine all first year players on the practice squad received an identical offer.

Not to pee in anyone's cheerios though, so good for him.

Thank you I didn't know that it was a common thing. But, if the player doesn't get the job done, even if he was on the PS, I suppose he doesn't get an extension. Am I right?

    It really depends.

The team in giving him the extension is risking virtually nothing. NFL contracts aren't guaranteed unless such guarantees are negotiated (and in these cases they aren't unless he's recieved a tablescrap of a bonus, like $5K). They can cut him again and it will essentially have no impact at all on the team. It's a situation where everyone will get an offer because there's nothing to lose for the team and everything to gain if the player makes the team the following year. Because of the CBA's rules on when a player can realistically sign with another team, a 3 year contract is the standard contract to put a player up to that point.

Then again, if you're looking for a bright spot, there's usually heavy turnaround with 2-4 PS spots every year where we constantly bring players in for a couple weeks to try them out, evaluate them and then release them for someone else. In 2008, Giguere managed to avoid being one of those spots and was kept on all year. If a player's not getting it done, they usually don't make it the entire year on the PS.

I look at it from a run blocking perspective

We all saw how well Garcon could run block for Mike Hart in the HOF game against the Redskins in the pre-season last year.

Knowing and seeing how ripped Giguere is, and the fact we have another big body in Roy Hall, if 2 out of those 3 (Garcon, Hall, Giguere) could step up on the WR side, it will not only help our WR depth and production, it will also help with the run blocking from the WR perspective, IMO. That is assuming if they are coached right.
